Indicators failed

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lord Congi, Jul 10, 2016.

  1. On the way down the indicator lamp on the dash failed, when I got there i saw they would come on and stay on but not flash, same with emergency lights, on the way back (i thought i'd just waggle the leaver) when waggling the light on the dash came back on so thought they were fine again but now the lights dont even come on :(
    Any idea, fuses looked OK

  4. Or the big white wire at the fuse box hasn't come adrift.....
mine had and only found out after I'd paid out for an expensive new flasher unit. At least I have a spare relay lying around somewhere

  5. Where is it ?

  6. Under the fuse box from memory.
    Big square relay.

There are two; headlights and indicators.

  7. Relay about an inch square at the bottom / back of the fusebox , LHD it`s nearest to the door if i remember .
Ignition on , indicator on and give it a wiggle ...

You should feel it clicking .

  8. Could be bad contacts so not enough voltage to trip the flashers. I'd try giving the connectors a good clean first and check your earths.

  10. I had bad power contacts that were slaved from the emergency flasher switch - i took it out and it fell apart in my hands. Cable-tied it all together and been fine since.

I went through the whole system before I found it cleaning bulbs, contacts, replacing relays. Unfortunately it was intermittent so took some time to get to the bottom of it.

  11. if there is a leak on your windscreen seal or any rusty holes above it then the water tracks nicely down the wiring and finds its way into the relay. Ive removed the relay in the past, taken the case off it , WD 40d it and let it dry out...it worked when I put it back but its not great. If it is full of water then Fix the relay then either fix the hole temporarily, if its the seal then your local windscreen chap might be able to gun some sealt in there to stop the leak..

or indeed it could just be a faulty relay or...summat else! lol

  14. Whenever I have niggly electrical snags like this the first thing I do is spin all the fuses while in the fuse box to ensure the contacts are good - they often corrode over the winter and cause this sort of thing. Always worth a shot and has saved me a number of times.

  15. I seem to have lost the little screws on the indicator stalk so I can't keep mine on without holding the lever up or down when making a turn but yours sounds like the relay.

  16. Ok.... an update and advice is needed....

OK fault was, left right indicators turn on when the indicator stalk is moved into left / right position. Both left and right lights come on when hazard switch pulled.
Dashboard lights go on, as does hazard switch light when pulled/ stalked moved.
Lights do not flash in the main, but occasionally work as normal.

Fuses all checked, and relay removed, connectors cleaned etc.

On initial insertion of relay, all worked fine... then it managed two flashes and back to solid light no flash. This was the case for the left and right stalk movement and the hazard switch - dashboard lights came on as expected, when the two flashes happened.

Battery strong, all earths are cleaned and sorted around the area, and fuses turned and checked... all good. Relay is water free...

Is replacing the relay the best shout next? as @Cov1987 says its intermittent, so could take a while..

thanks in advance for humour and advice to follow!! ;)

Mine did the same in the landmark @Lord Congi it was a knackered flasher unit. Made more annoying that it had managed to pass the MOT that came with it, but I now had to pay for the repairs

@monkeyvanwestybike i considered hand signals but figured most of the drivers driving up my backside were too young to know what they meant!

  19. 'I want to go straight on' looks very much like the salute Hitler used to make. So is a full translation 'I want to go straight on through Poland and Belgium'...?
