Indicator tell-tales

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by LewBLew, Apr 7, 2014.

  1. I'm not sure if this is a common problem but whichever way I indicate only the right-hand telltale on the dashboard lights up. Same for the hazards.

Not a massive issue but I wonder if anyone has had this before and whether it's an easy fix? Perhaps someone is familiar with the wiring diagram?

    Thankies :)

  2. I believe that both tell tales should light up at the same time, rather than indicating which way you are indicating … at least that is the case on my 1971 built cross over US import. I had same it was either a blown bulb or dodgy connection.

  3. Sorry I should have said - RHD '73 Late bay.

I'll double check the bulbs. Would be interested to know if both tell tales are supposed to light up at the same time (wonder why they put in two then!).

  4. I checked the wiring diagram for mine.

  5. WHS, it's the same on mine. Both light up when indicating. Crossover & US import here too.

  6. Probably the left-hand tell tale bulb then!

  7. Bulb or connection I'd have thought. Check the easy/simple things 1st.

  8. yep, will be the buld, bulb holder, or a poor connection

  9. Both should light up irrespective of direction.

  10. Thanks everyone I will investigate the bulb :)

  12. Did a quick investigation without taking the wheel off and found I could 'push' (pull?) the indicator stalks upwards a couple of mil and the self-cancellation thingy engaged and started working again. Also the steering wheel lock worked better.

Only problem is how can I make sure it stays there. Are there screws?

  13. Anyone know how the stalk mount is connected?

  14. Mine's a Crossover with the dodgy type switch that is only available as an incredibly poor and expensive copy from VWH. When I wired in the VWH replacement switch, the tell tales worked correctly - Right for Right and Left for Left. That switch had auxiliary contacts to make the tell tales. I had so many problems with the switch (dodgy contacts, horn sounding when indicating, horn sounding when flashing full beam .......) that I binned it and bought a replacement simple stalk off eBay. This had no auxiliary contacts, so I wired in some relays to run the tell tales so they work correctly according to the direction of turn.
