Indicator fuses blowing

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by alpha981, Apr 25, 2018.

  1. Van has been parked up for the winter, just going through some pre MOT checks and have found that the indicator keeps blowing fuses.

    Symptoms are:

Fuse 12 blows when using the OS indicator
Fuse 8 blows when using the hazards

I started to fault find this a few days back and the problem resolved itself, only to return today.
There is continuity between the contacts in both the front and rear bulb holders showing a short of some sort, but can't find it yet...

    Anything obvious to check?

  2. Think I've narrowed it down to the indicator switch.... On dissambly I can't however see anything wrong.

There is a feed which is black with free and white trace, and the right indicator is black with green. I can't really see what can go wrong to cause issues

Problem seems to have now vanished again!! Someone please help me stay sane!!!

  3. I had a similar issue last week but didn’t blow the fuse , just melted the relay.
Check wires behind the dash just incase they are rubbing on the heater controls and exposing bare wire.

  5. found it - just for future reference...

In the indicator switch, the green and black (RH) inidicator feed wire was bent over slightly too high and was grounding out in the metal plate that sits between the indicator and wiper "halves". small bend and bit of insulation tape and now sorted...

Only trouble is I've bu**ered up the indicators and lost a spring now!!!!
