Hi, I’m currently travelling through Spain and it’s 37c, I have one of those oil temp dipsticks which lights up my oil light if it’s hot. The thing is I’m travelling at a constant 50-55mph and the light comes on after a while then will stay on until I stop and then the oil temp will drop back to normal. Am I worry about nothing? The light is meant to come on around 107c which indicates the engine is too hot but is that really too hot in this climate and continuous 55mph for 5+ hours?
107 isn’t hot for a bus 120 is when you start getting concerned. I’ve found dropping 5mph can make a big difference
Depending on what you have I thought they flashed at 125 Deg to warn you it's getting hot and stays illuminated if it goes above 135 Deg.
It’s this one - https://www.justkampers.com/oil-tem...MI-5PHwLWlgAMVGoFQBh3EZgspEAQYASABEgILkPD_BwE says 225f it flickers, 235f on constant
Those temperatures are not particularly hot for a van, so kind of false alarm. More intended for a Beetle, I think. An oil temp gauge would be much better.
Well I might just unplug it, I don’t fancy staring at in again all day! I’m sure if it was overheating then the engine would’ve gone bang at some point today
Do that! Never really seen the point of them. A bit of a VW relic from the 70s. A gauge would be much better.
If you are really clever you can adjust it with a quick twist so it starts to click on at 125C / 260F then its actually some use. If you drive at 50-55mph with a healthy well adjusted engine and are honest about it, and change down and rev it on hills going slower but blowing more air over the engine, its extremely hard for it to get too hot. And when it gets too hot, driving slower for a while with the engine at reasonably high RPM - like 30mph in 3rd gear , is usually a better way of cooling down, rather than stopping and letting it heat soak leading to other issues like electronic ignition going unreliable and petrol boiling in carburettors.
It's also worth popping open the engine lid when the mercury starts getting nearer 40* , drops the oil gauge temperature about 5* on mine . Some will disagree saying doesn't lower the head temps but every little helps .... Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
