Picked this up from Lazy Andy's thread on jobs to do with the dash board removed and thought it may be of interest http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums...ash pod with Rev Counter/t2baywindowpanel.jpg http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=49861&p=444977&hilit=rev counter#p444977 Mr B
Mega easy! (As long as you have a pick up wire from the coil) Took about an hour including getting at the dash and wiring with proper, double crimp seperate insulation terminals. If I were to have a gripe it would be that the backlight is a different colour to the other clocks but then I'm just being an OCD pedant!
Cheers ... a job for Saturday afternoon. My guage back lights dont currently work, think that's a switch issue so I wont notice!
If the unit's a VDO, pull out the instrument bulbs - they may have removable coloured "socks" on them.
They do, however if you take them off they're about 6 million candle power compared to the VW ones, having said that a CANDLE is six million candle power compared to the VW ones!
I put one in the 'spare' dash space from a late (ish) MGB. It almost matches the original VDO gauges (almost). If you are really keen you could change the backlights to match - I removed the little green globes behind the original facia and replaced the white backlights with blue LED's - same in the back of the rev counter. Only went for blue LEDs as my van is blue.
I put some LED strips from Maplin in - there's a thread on here somewhere. I've lost the pic. Or white LED bulbs seem to work just as well. Fit 'em, and you'll get bright dash lighting that's as strong as your VDO rev counter. An essential mod, IMHO.
Got the LED bulbs from autobulbsdirect.co.uk - 286 direct fitments, and also a same colour LED for the rev counter which will be something other than a 286 (or is it 283 - I can never remember the fitment type without looking). However - if I were doing it again I think I would do what Snotty has done - led strip from Maplins - it comes with a sticky back peel off strip and its cheap as chips and it comes in a variety of colours.

Just the way I did mine . Well worth it and they don't drop out on the dimmer, so you can dim them. Here's Chapper's pic:
