In an ideal world?

Most of us bought a van without really knowing what we wanted - we knew we wanted a vw camper that's fair enough - but how many of us actually knew all the variants? how many would now wish they had chosen a different interior or maybe engine? most of you know my thoughts but in the scope of this being a discussion forum i thought i'd kick off.
I have a 2 litre auto - wish i'd bought a manual - why? if i ever wanted to do an engine swap it would be easier. That said the auto is very easy to drive but poor on fuel.
I have a Westy rear hinge berlin, arguably the best of both worlds - neatly laid out and well made, that said 3/4 bed is a bit tight for me and the mrs and climbing upstairs is not for us - would i have a full width? difficult to say, i don't like the big wardrobe partly blocking the door in a helsinki and wouldn't like less storage space if i had a conversion with full width and no cupboards.
Fuel injected vs carbs? i have no problem with the fuel injected - but that's because it hasn't gone wrong yet...... again, carbs seem to cause a lot of you problems - mainly due to wear or poor set up so i guess it's swings and roundabouts on that one.
Lhd versus Rhd - this one causes much discussion, with me the choice was down to money, one of the few things i researched was rust - i quickly learned that a good Rhd was way out of my price range and i stand by the desision i made on that one - again if i could afford it of course i'd have Rhd - we drive on the right but other than the odd overtake it hasn't really bothered me - the biggest bind is the slider on the wrong side if we pull into a layby.
Tax free? this was one thing i do wish i'd researched better - alright it's "only" £220 a year but that £220 would pay your insurance, as it is paying tax and insurance costs me £400 a year which for a 2nd car that's parked up 25 days out of 30 it's a bit daft.
Colour - these vans seem to look happier in bright colours - would i have chosen Brown? to be fair it wasn't the colour i went for - once the seller told me they were limited edition i just made a rash decision.
Tintop or poptop? tintops look better but i'm very tall - could i manage with one? maybe but i'd probably live in the awning and just use the van to get there - what's the point in that?
so who would change bits or have picked differently but now feels so attatched to the van that they have that they can't?

  2. I could do with a super viking roof to shove the kids in. They won't sleep in my riviera as its to cramped.

  3. The only criteria we had was that it needed a poptop of some description, cos mr moosey is over 6' tall. We didn't research types of poptop or anything else (though did see a super viking and thought it looked weird with a tent on the roof, so dismissed that one). With hindsight, it would have been nice to have a roof we could sleep in so we could leave the 'downstairs' for sitting and cooking, and not have to get the bed out.
Too attached to the van now to do anything about it!

you bought another van yet mate?

  10. My decision was an impatient finanicial one , sure I could have saved for another 2 years and maybe have got what I wanted but hey lifes to short. I would have had a Westy or a viking, easier for the children to sleep in , it would be red :)

Probably shouldn't have bought one at all, it's close to causing a divorce!
If it does I'm selling it and buying a crewcab splitty with a Scooby conversion

  16. I wanted an old van that was easy to work on that we could go as a family for days out ans sleep over if we were having a good time

Im not often wrong in my ideas but this time i missed the goal by a long shot
I am however stubborn as a grass stain and ive kept at it

To be honest i cant think of another vehicle that fits the same simple specs
Theres not much you can fit in a single car park space that will sleep four and have a cooker and sink
A bay takes up the same sort of space as a landy discovery but a disco has less room inside

  17. Disco ? wot , u alluding to a bit of Y.M.C.A./in the navy there para?(I bags to be the construction worker !)

  18. Disco is the shortend name of discovery the landy guys use

    Fender is landrover defender

    Disco is landrover discovery

Toylander often shortnend to toy is a freelander

Series is a series landrover and normally followed with early or late

The landy world is an awesome place to excist in and they dont suffer the scene tax as much as we do

  19. Well I always said I'd never get an Orange one!!! Look where that got me!!!! If I could change anything at all about ours, bearing in mind I love her to bits but if I had to pick one thing I'd rather have a roof space that had a full bed up there rather than the two pull out bunks on our Devon pop top!?
