Import duty????????

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by beatnick, Mar 2, 2013.

  1. Friend of mine has just restored a split single cab and tried to register it but they say it needs paperwork for the import duty. The bus was shipped in from Oz in 98 as a mess and nothing has been done to it until 6 months ago.
I understood that there was no import duty on a vehicle over a certain age, I didnt have to pay anything on mine but that was from the EU.
    Anyone know the rules?
    Cheers folks

  2. Vehicles of historic importance get charged 5% rather than the usual 20% (ask Rickyroo, he was able to argue this for his Champagne Edition) but if it's coming from outside the EU, then there is import duty to pay. The reason why you didn't pay import duty on yours is because of the EU Single Market - there is no import duty on goods moving between Member States of the EU.

it wasn't just because mine was special edition i got away with the 5% although it helped, i've heard of a few that got it too, you'll need a C&E386 form to register it, they base the cost on the price paid for the vehicle (reciept price - wink wink) i dunno how you'll sort this so long after it came here though? i suggest ringing dvla or visiting a local office, or you could ring a shipper like kingstown and see if they can advise, they handled all my application for me, i may have the details on the C&E form somewhere though, keep us posted or holler if you need me to find my papers.

  4. That's VAT, paid at either 5% or 20% on anything from outside the EU. You need to fill in paperwork to get the 5% rate, not sure if there's a time limit. Duty is separate from VAT, but is a small amount if anything on a camper. The paperwork might cost a few quid as well.

  5. Thanks fellas, I will pass on the info to my mate who being an honest John will no doubt go for the 20% rate, NOT.
    Thanks again
