Ignition issue

  1. Evenin' all...
I finally managed to move my bus into my garage about 18 months back, and it drove in under its own steam...but now although the electrics are otherwise working fine, the battery light doesn't light up with the ignition and there's no hint of the ability to start. I *can* hear the fuel cut off solenoid activating, so there's power getting to some places - but not apparently to the solenoid.

Battery is fully charged and I've cleaned battery earth, transmission to body strap and battery +ve to the solenoid. I've also checked that there is 12V at the dash and that the battery light is a) functional and b) seated properly...

I'm running out of ideas where to look next - so hoping someone can offer some more pointers please?

Have you tried shorting the solenoid?, although it does sound like an ignition switch issue.

  3. I've not tried yet - in between painting and tiling today I ran out of steam! I checked the ignition switch connector - and it's seated fine. The oil light comes on as expected with the ignition...so something's working in there! I'll short the solenoid tomorrow when I've got some energy back!

Also try taking a wire from the 1/4 inch male tag on the starter motor , thread it through into the engine bay and then turn ignition on then touch the wire to battry positive.
If it turns over when you do this, then you lilelu have a fault in the ignition switch start contact, they burn out over time. People fit " hot start" relays to mask over the degradation.

Fit a starter pushbutton or replace the ignition switch if the ignition switch has failed.

  5. I assume the oil light comes on. I thought if the battery light (alternator/generator) on the dash doesn't light up, then a possible cause is the alternator or dynamo wiring or regulator.

Are the fuses all nice and clean and not blown. I would clean them all up.

  6. Thanks for the pointers guys - seems the issue was with the cleanliness (or otherwise, as it turns out) of the 1/4" tag on the starter. The one thing I didn't clean before! The engine will now start, but the battery light is still off all the time - more to investigate yet!

  7. wiring connector corrosion is normal, I would check out your charging system next. common fault on here you could search for or ask the experts. do you have an alternator or dynamo/generator?

  8. Alternator...

  9. If the battery light holder and bulb are good, maybe check alternator wiring and regulator, much reported problem on here. Try a search on the forum. You could use your meter to check alternator output voltage.

  10. That's next on the list...baby steps!
