I attempted to start the Double Cab today but ended up taking bits off again. The first couple of tries she spun over and over made some noise like she was going to start but didn't. Then I got the click and no attempt to turn over got underneath hit starter with hammer, now no click at all put ignition on put screwdriver across terminals and nothing. Even connected a wire from battery to coil still nothing. So, I took starter off Gsf wants £173 does that sound about right? You get £47 back when you return yours. Or should I find somewhere that refurbish my original one. Sent from my SM-G981B using Tapatalk
If you do, be sure it's not somewhere that will just take it to GSF like you would then add some profit.
Shame you don't live down here - I took mine to a proper old school 'starter motor and alternator' fella who fixes them in his shed. Cost £60 and is faultless now. You could send it to him maybe?
You could always try an exchange unit - Unit Exchange | Alternator and Starter Specialists | Hertfordshire
We live oop North, there will be a man in a shed not far away who'll do it for a tenner if he can be tracked down.
I've ordered the Gsf one. I got a starter for my bus from them 4 years ago and not had any problems. It comes with a 12-month warranty and a 60-day no quibble return. JK wants £265 for what looks like exactly the same starter. I'll see what it's like when it turns up on Tuesday. Sent from my SM-G981B using Tapatalk
I sparked like crazy when I put a screwdriver across the terminals. Sent from my SM-G981B using Tapatalk
Its OK, the starter I bought off Eddie for £20 was not the automatic variant. Also- its nicely painted black, it's been on a vehicle since being painted and it's back in a parts stash. Hmm The basic solenoid bit AFAIR is remove two screws, desolder the solenoid coil wires from the back of the solenoid, pull apart, release bits, clean and grease bits and sand the contactor contacts, reassemble. Techenders level if you have a small blowtorch or a big soldering iron.. Did mine when I had the gearbox off at Bears Motorsport a couple of years back.
So fitted the starter and nothing she still doesn't turn over I've got 14v at the starter, but nothing happens when I turn the key no click no nothing at all. I put a screwdriver across the terminals and the starter whizzes, but doesn't turn the engine? I'm stumped any ideas, please, guys. Sent from my SM-G981B using Tapatalk
Have you got the correct starter for your bellhousing? Certainly on type 1s, there are two different sizes (of bellhousing).
No idea I put them side by side and they looked the same just new one was a bit longer. Sent from my SM-G981B using Tapatalk
Have you checked the distance between the mounting flange and the gear Ian? Also does it not need the solenoid to throw the gear out , so shorting the motor terminals will not engage it?
I'm glad you said that as I thought I was going mad. The flange and gear looked the same. I just can't figure out why it won't turn over. Sent from my SM-G981B using Tapatalk
Which terminals? You need to earth the body of the starter, connect the big screw stud to battery +ve, then short +ve to the starter solenoid tab. That should make the pinion pop out and the starter turn. If you're just shorting to the copper braid, that will just make the starter turn without the pinion extended.
Well, that's JK for you. Sounds like you're not actually operating the solenoid and the pinion's not extending. Does the solenoid click? Is the starter in or out of the van?
