  1. Hey all,
new to the forum just saying hi and after some advice /feedback
I work for Go Outdoors (large superstore size camping and outdoor pursuits store) for those that have never heard of us .
This year the company have decided to raise money for Mountain rescue(england and wales),
Mountain Rescue England and Wales were called to over 1500 incidents in 2009, helping walkers, mountain bikers, runners, climbers and a host of other people who needed assistance, as well as motorists trapped in winter snow.

Mountain rescue in the UK is free of charge to the casualty but relies on the support and generosity of the public to maintain this valuable community service. Without public donations, they simply could not function.
Each store has been given a target of £16,000 and has been asked to come up with ideas to raise the cash.
I was thinking of combining my love for old VW'S with some kind of charitable event, the store is based in Southampton and i was thinking something along the lines of turn up in your van or other old vw pay a small donation to the cause (i am going to see if i can get a discount in the store for peeps attending the meet).
maybe a BBQ with all the profits being donated of course, CRUISE IN A BUS, where maybe people pay to have a cruise round southampton, Raffle with camping prizes which i will hopefully scrounge of the suppliers and reps and of course a chance to get together with other like minded vw nuts and generally have a good time.
so this is still in the very early stages, so i suppose what i would like to know is:
Is this the sort of thing you would attend?
Is this the sort of thing you would support (cruise around southampton) ?
any other ideas for the day? , bearing in mind its gotta be for charity.
would welcome all feedback positive or negative as i would love this to work and maybe be repeated.
    cheers guys
    Glen.

  2. Hi Glen, welcome to the forum. I think that is a brilliant idea, although don't forget a lot of people may have a large distance to travel

  3. hi thanks for the feed back, mmmm had thought of that but i also have to take into account the size of the car park so maybe as it will propably be just local-ish people may be fine , of course anyone wanting to come would be welcome, will keep ya posted
    glen.

  4. great idea Glen and a very worthy cause too. There are quite a few TLBers around that side of the coast, so hopefully you'll have a good turn-out. Could you also do an on-line raffle on here, for those of us who can't make the trek but who want to join in? Ask Hailfrank or HorTs. :)

  5. great idea , many thanks will keep you posted ;)
    glen.

  6. May turn up but depends upon date and where abouts in Southampton you are.

  7. this is very early stages at the moment, it would defianetly be on the weekend though,we are in millbrook which is just off the m27 so no need to go all the way into the city,
    cheers
    glen :)

  10. just had another thought , what about a charity auction where people donate parts they cant sell or cant be bothered to list (in my case),and we auction them off on the day
    cheers

  11. Hi and welcome, as a keen hill walker/mountain biker/snow boarder I think what you have suggested is worthy and admirable and would certainly support an event of that nature!!!

  14. thanks to all who have responded this week end ,the ideas are coming in thick and fast looks like i am going to have to sort a date out , a thought about the fair weather owners should i wait untill spring or try and sneak it in before the weather changes this year ?????????????
    waht do u think?????

  15. And (Diddyman listen up) the newly formed Driftwood VW Club have said the will join in the fun too. O0

  16. Hi Glen,

Like the idea...as next year is the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's loss (April 14th) and it was from Southampton that the ship set out from, it would be fitting to make a 'voyage' to Southampton to pay respect to all affected by that sad event.

After all who would have thought that 100 years later a group of VW enthusiasts were to take time to pay tribute and to meet up in that fine City and to raise money for a worthy 'modern' day cause too.

    Only a thought.. :)

    Cheers Dave.

  18. Hi Slug,

From Pompey so agree that Soton needs all the charity it can muster!! :))

However I snuck off under cover of Mrs J today to your store to stock up on camping bits b4 hitting the New Forest. Nearly fainted from the heat and had to refresh myself with a tennants super once we got home.

Our Bay doesn't have any blue or red on it so would be perfect for an incognito appearance and we would be more than willing to support an event.

Bye the Bye is yours a tin top with chrome wheels we spotted at the store a while ago?
