Had my camper (1600 tp single carb) mot'd last week and asked them to see if it was running rich. Exhaust and plugs were black and it was idling quite quick. id guess 1000rpm. He stuck the probe in and it said 11%. Made some adjustment and got it down to 4% and told me to try that. Drove fine home if a bit sluggish. Saturday. Didn't want to start! Then was ok on the choke but idled so slow it cut out once. He did say turn the smaller screw out a quarter turn to make it a touch richer. So I did. Now it stutters and farts everywhere! So from what I've now read, richer and idling quicker is the way to go. Shoulda left well alone! :-(
What I want to know though. When it was running great at 11% should I have left it alone!? If it ain't broke don't try n fix it kind of thing!
He prob tweaked it as it was way over the limit for the MOT. I'd check that your choke is coming off properly and that the float valve is sealing. What colour are your plugs after a good run? As above, set the carb up with the instructions above.
Well I just changed the plugs about 3wks ago ready for the summer. They were black but I guess he had been doing some shorter journeys over the winter. It passed the mot. Visual smoke check only on a 73. This was my fault!
