How much to change gear change bushes?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by top banana racing, May 10, 2013.

  1. As it's a gearbox out job and I no longer have such facilities, I want to take it to a garage to do.
Can someone give me an idea on how long it takes or what the approximate cost is?
I have the bush set already.
My gearchange is like stirring porridge, they're all in there just miles apart, I've already got a 'lifter' fitted as before that I had to push the lever into the dash for 1st and my seat for 2nd!
Should I get a 'scat' shifter or similar at the same time? Or is it possible that it's just my lever that's duff? (can this be checked?)

  2. well if it"s a complete bush replacement its an engine out job so you will have to ? ask for a "final "price, and whilst they are in about it, perhaps (money available?)you would wish to have the other change parts inspected and replaced if nec.? The replacing the g/change lever is a moot point i.e. are you /me masking a problem rather than curing one? mine was as yours is and I fitted an aftermarket unit to agreeable success thou when engine comes out ,bushes will be done (be daft not to)and of course change your box oil (if you haven't already)

  3. Already done the oil and Birdy says you can get the rear one in almost all the way without dropping the box.
I think I'll do this until the motor/box HAVE to come out for something then get it done properly, along with things like a new clutch etc which are peanuts compared to the labour cost. (I did this to my beetle when the clutch bearing went and had EVERYTHING replaced whilst we were in there)
Meanwhile on the lookout for an aftermarket shifter, any recommendations or 'avoids'?

  4. You are welcome to borrow my Empi shifter that I'm no longer using (as I went back to the stock one) to see how you get on with that - should have thought of that last weekend when I saw you.

Did you put the front bush in and check the sprung pin in the ball at the bottom of the gearstick? Both are only a few minutes easy job and made a HUGE difference to mine.

Personally I much prefer the original one. Yes, the Empi was much more positive, but there is something very nice about the original. Having said that, would probably have kept the Empi one had I not lost 3rd and 4th and gone back and tried (and decided I liked!) the original.

Would be happy to help with the front bush/pin checking if you want to pop over again sometime.

  5. I'd love to try it out, I have the bush kit etc was going to fit it tonight but might wait a week now and come over to see you.
If I like it would you want to sell the shifter?

  6. Yes would be happy to sell it - am enjoying my original one so don't think I'll go back to it now.

  7. You may be able to do the rear coupling with the box still in situ but to change the shift rod bushes inside the tube the engine and box have to come out

Whilst they are out for the bushes it gives you the perfect oppurtunity to check and relace the fuel pipes including the filler neck
and replace the clutch and flywheel oil seal if needed
