How much fuel is quarter of a tank

  1. For years I've put up with a wobbly, flapping fuel gauge as I've recently found out it's an early gauge working from a late sender, new tube type sender in about 12lts of petrol back in that I syphoned out and its just above quater of a tank, was about half before but that was flapping ps yes I've stuck sender in place , didn't fancy drilling tank old one was like a twist fitt

  2. Don’t know whether an early’s the same as a late, but the reserve mark on a late is about 10 litres, so looks about right.

  4. Officially it holds 60 litres on my 79. I recently went to fill up with 3 litres already in the tank. It took 56.4 litrs to cut off, so 60 is pretty accurate.

The gauge however is somewhat mischievous. It goes all the way over when full but a quarter tank is down in the red.

  5. My wobbly gauge was down to the wires to it were shorting on the dial casing. VW fitted some really rubbish insulation and it was cracking. I fitted rubber grommets and small push fit connectors and the gauge is rock solid now.
