How high should i rev it?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dookie, Dec 4, 2012.

  1. I was driving home tonight with the radio on full and I noticed that the rev counter was at 5,000 (I dont know how fast i was going because the speedo doesnt work). So i slowed down to 4,000. What i want to know is what is a decent rpm to drive at with out destroying my engine?

    Cheers

was you stuck in 3rd gear ???

  3. Were you driving ing 2nd ;)?

Assuming your rev counter works...if it's a 1600, you don't really want to rev it over 4,500 in short spurts. There's no real point in going any higher. Over that, and your rather primitive crank will start doing the Mashed Potato in its bearings...

1600 Bays cruise nicely at 3,500 - 3,750 (55-60mph). That's their sweet spot, which you can actually feel. Anything over that is cruel.

  4. Is this the same rev range for a 2ltr type 4 engine? Also what should this engine idle at?.Mine is idling at about1600 to 1800 rpm.

  14. rev the :moon: out off it and turn the radio up >:D

  16. Idle should be about 850-ish. If it can't do it, get it fixed!

  17. I don't think I'd have time to look at the rev counter at 5000 rpm, as I would be hanging on for dear life, as I would be doing 100mph, and I am sure the Wife would have hit me with a shoe, long before that :)

  19. What is the best rev for 2 ltrs then?

    red line...
    4600 for T1,
    5400 for T4
    I believe.
I merrily towed two dinghies behind my 1700 T4 engined bus at 60mph in 3rd for a good 20 minutes with no harm done. I don't know how that relates to revs.
T1 cranks are made from jelly, T4 from steel.
