How do you pop a Devon pop top?

  1. I've mentioned on a couple of threads that my top just don't pop and I will be using Barneyrubbles wooden struts idea and eventually will replace the springs with uprated ones, however I thought it might help if I knew how it was supposed to work so I have a couple of questions, I have the Devon concertina style with a roofcap:

    - Once unclipped should it spring up on it's own or does it still need someone to push it up? If the latter do you need to clip anything to hold it up.
    - On each strut there is a very very sharp small metal bit poking out. What is it and what does it do? I'm assuming it's not supposed to be as sharp as it is.
    - To replace the springs do I just unscrew the plate (the one with 5 screws in a line joining the 2 struts) take the bottom half off to get to the springs?

Thanks for the help, sorry for all the questions :-[

  2. Jasper. You need to push it up until it 'locks' into place. I usually pop one end up then the other.

  3. If it's the later Devon one, it just needs a good shove up. The folding arms in each corner should lock it into place.

I'd advise against just undoing the spring mounting plate. Put the roof up, get two ratchet straps and mount them sideways on the struts so they prevent the strut expanding any more. Then you can undo the plate.

Without the straps, it'll go ping in a big way and prob take your fingers/head off. With the straps you can release the spring pressure gently.

  4. also the roof cap won't help ours has to be shoved by someone stronger than me and to get it down invloves dodging out of the way cos it comes down quick and is heavy + we have 4 bits of wood one in each corner - not as nice as barneys invention

  5. Them sharp bits are probably the grub screws, i wouldnt bother with stronger springs if you have a new cap on , they only just hold it , thats why i used the wooden strutts. do one side then the other make sure the roof is un clipped first. You need to have a good read up of how to fit those stronger?? springs if you do fit them??I think i wrote about three books on how to do it for the yips  ;) Use the wooden ones its easier ;)
