Horn relay wiring help

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ianlea73, Mar 18, 2016.

  1. This is from my 71 beetle but all wiring is the same so sorry if it's Not strictly allowed.
Basically the wiring was all pulled apart on the relay so I need help rewiring if anyone would be so kind.
Basically I have 12v from the main loom with a second wire spliced to it so 2x12v
I then have one wire from the main loom I assume to be earth.
Then a wire from the relay to the horn.
Can anyone make sense of what goes where by these pics?

Wire on left is 12v with the 2nd 12v linked to it.
    Wire on right is earth.

Red wire goes from relay to the horn inside the front wing.

  2. Standard Beetle wiring doesn't have a relay connected to the horn.
I suspect that this is some previous owner bodge. The terminal numbers 85 & 86 are usually associated with a warning buzzer.

Horns are often switched through the earth so it would be useful to see what switch and what horn is on?

Neither of my horns has a relay. They come off an 8 amp fuse (if I remember correctly) which will allow a good 100 watts of horn power. Plenty enough, I think.

  5. Standard horn doesn't need a relay.
I'd would use one on an air horn as they take a bit to get them going.

Stick the 12v directly on the horn to make sure it's not rubbered.
It's worth getting a cheap volt meter as it looks like you've a bit of wiring to do.

  6. I directly connected the wiring loom to the horn but still no good!
I have 12v to the horn & I've even removed the horn & direct wired it across a battery!
I have continuity at the horn button.

  7. mine just through a push switch earth n live easy no relay

Maybe you need a new horn?
