Horn push...a life of its own

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by bryandsi, Apr 2, 2013.

  1. Me again...having sorted my lights problem, I have turned to the horn push.
It s always been a bit hit or miss, sometimes working okay others not at all, sometimes beeps when I turn the wheel!

Removed the push and undone the 3 screws to remove the carrier and springs, it appears that as well as a small washer under each screw and spring there should also be an insulated washer, is this right?? If so, one of mine has fallen to pieces and is probably what is causing the shorting out when I turn the wheel - does anyone know the proper way to put this together?/
    Cheers

  2. Ours also developed a life of it's own and we've wound up with a switch on our dash - problem solved!

seems there is a fault with the repro rubber coupling at the bottom of the steering column, have you fitted one recently?

  4. just by pass and wire a switch on the dash like most of us! I know you want it perfect but sometimes 40 year old vans are not worth the trouble! ;)

  5. Be especially careful if you have a dead body in the boot as the horn may attract unwanted attention from the police. Best to keep some pornography on board to distract the officer.

  6. ^this. Especially important if you're attending any beauty pagents...:)

Fix your horn. It'll take less time than fitting a separate button. Get all the bits that should be on the horn bits - folk like Heritage may have them. Bleaty horn while turning the wheel is likely to be the column rubbing at the base of the steering column, where it gets kicked. Have a search on here for horn threads - has been covered several times.

  7. Mine must have been faulty at some point as a PO has put a switch on the dash. I find it a bit odd but guess the horn push is a fiddly job??

  8. Nope. Fixing your horn is a straightforward job, and probably takes less time that fitting a seperate button.

  9. Sorry to hark back to the movie, but why didn't Richard just pull the fuse out?

  10. It would've spoilt the film :). The Bays in LMSS were lates anyway, so they wouldn't have had bleaty horn syndrome, as VW had fixed it </bus geek off>

Still one of my fave movies...

The plate at the bottom of the column has slots to fine adjust if the horn keeps going off.

  12. Cheers all - will have a look tomorrow at the bottom plate

And he'd have had no brake lights.

The lovely thing about that film is the bus had the last word.

  14. Mine used to blast sometimes when I went round corners! I buggered about with it for weeks and every time you think it's fixed it comes back! Seem to remember it was something to do with a wire on the bottom of the steering column. Either way I gave up and fitted a new switch! Been as good as gold ever since!

  15. True!

  16. Done it !!! After much head scratching and taking things apart, it turns out the connection at the horn push was just grasing the nut holding the steering wheel on and sounding the horn every half turn !!
