Homeless hose connection

  1. Afternoon all. I've just about to change my air filter and noticed I have a disconnected pipe coming from the air filter housing.

The housing has two pipes similar. One goes to the t piece and the fuel breathers pipes but this one doesn't go anywhere.

It looks like a vacuum pipe of some sort but I can't see anywhere it fits!

    Any ideas?

  2. If you mean the one dangling on the right, it goes to the thermo valve on top of the air box. The other valve connection then runs to a vacuum source, either at the rear of the carb or a skinny pipe on the manifold. The whole lot operates the warm air feed when the engine's cold.

  3. By Jove I think your right. Assuming it connects to the brass shiny one. Where does the black one connect to next to it then? There defo wasn't a hose connected to this one at all.

  4. I'm trying to fit the same filter to my van at the mo' and Snotty has been a great help. The black connection is the one that will go to a vacuum connection on your carb or manifold. You just need a length of hose.

  5. Have a search on here. There was a long thread on air boxes a while ago.

The other hose either connects to a port on the rear of your carb, or to a small pipe on the manifold. Your vac line looks pretty ratty - worth replacing. If it splits, you'll run lean.

PS You're missing the warm air pickup that goes under the tinware.

PPS You crankcase breather hose to the airbox is also missing.

  6. Snotty, do you have a picture of the twiddly bit you told me about that goes inside these boxes ?

  7.
  8. Bloody thing is falling apart lol. I've managed to get it to RNJ Motorsport in Silverstone. I'm sure he can put her back together again.

  9. Bracket is fabricated and just needs holes drilling, a little tidying and then painting. Just need a few more bits like the adaptor for the crankcase breather hose, a clip to hold the box onto the bracket, and the twiddly bit. I'll be getting a stovepipe and some hoses this week as well as some air hose seals so hopefully soon I can get it all fitted in.

Apologies Starryboy, I seem to have hijacked your post. I did find a couple of pics that might help show a set up for the air filter so I'll try and post in a bit.

  11. Just hoses and things on the engine. This is one poorly maintained bus man. Makes me sad. Everywhere I look a hose is missing or a wire has come off or something's loose. Don't know, where to start lol

Never mind it's out of my hands now and with the professionals in silverstone. I'm sure he will either tell me that the engines fooled or he will sort it all out and get it running trim and proper.

  12. Kind of going through the same thoughts but I love a challenge ::) Bought the van from a guy that is a VW specialist but I'm finding lots of niggles that I feel should not have been there. I still think it is basically a sound van and after driving too many new cars, you kind of forget what it's like to own an older car, especially one that is 36 years old ! Keep at it though.
Here is the pic that I promised though it may be a bit late. The Air filter is the oil bath type but the that does not make any difference to the Paper type.

  14. Nice pic. Yes looks like A to E is missing. I couldn't see anything on the carb to connect it too. Unless its hidden round the side or back. Hopefully Rob will pick this up.

I'm hoping once he's given it the once over ill have an idea what's wrong. At the moment it appears as its all wrong and due to being a novice I don't know where to start.

  15. I'm sure he will sort it for you. I'd be interested in what he tells you though.

  16. Yeh me too lol.

Plan A is to do some basic checks to see if the engine isn't beyond economical repair.

Once it's passed those checks he will then give me a list of things that need doing. I guess I can then pay for them to be done or diy. If he feels the engine isn't worth the time and effort then i will have to decide on a plan b. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

  18. Ill check it out when the van returns. Cheers.

  19. Yeehaa Rob from RNJ has sorted the van. Gonna pick it up tomorrow.

Fuel system full of crap so he's cleaned it out and put filters on. Cleaned carbs out and also replaced a split hose. She now runs sweet. I'm dead excited. Can't wait to drive her. This will mean I drive it for pleasure now and not cos I have too.

  20. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Great news. It really does help if your blokey knows what to look for. :)
