Hiring a Bus in Australia.

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by top banana racing, Jan 28, 2013.

  1. Does anyone know of a company who would hire a camper in Australia?
I can find the usual stuff but want to get a T2 if I can.
Going next January so plenty of time to organise.

  2. I'm going over in march, I'll keep an eye out for you. Where you going?

  3. Not a T2, but I used 'Britz' when I went for 2 months and had no problems at all.

  4. Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns maybe? Got three weeks in total.

  5. Took us 3 weeks to drive Cairns to Sydney, with lots of stops :)

  6. Im going over to brisbane area this time so if your not in a rush, I'll keep an eye out.

Melbourne to Cairns is a massive drive, especially in 3 weeks

I'll see if I can dig anything up locally if you like.

There are places in each town, where people take all the buses ,cars that there have traveled in and no longer want (going home,or are staying put.)you would have more chance or picking a t2up in that sort of place.they are to old for the main hire companies .wwhen you have finished with it and do the same thing and of it gos again.that is how I done it,and went round twice .took me 4year thou.

  9. We hired a van from these people -

Based in Perth - we had a nice new HiAce but they also have bay windows. We drove up to Darwin (4500 miles) in 3 weeks - wouldn't like to try it in an aircooled though!!

  10. i would break that distance up alot, and consider only driving from sydney to brisbane. We have driven from cairns to adelaide in alot more than 3 weeks, its a very long way, i wouldnt rush the drive or it wont be nearly as enjoyable. Just my thoughts.

  11. Going in January. If the weather there is the same as this jan I would get a boat.

Dne cairns to Melbourne ten years ago. Get a camper with air con. This would be the first thing I would ask for. The east coast is massive. A t2 might be a bit to slow.

On a rough calculation it would be around 3000 km via the inland route, quite a bit more via the coastal route.
In January remember that if you go via the inland you will expect temperatures in excess of 40*c every day (often a lot more). Also you will be in Cairns for the wet season & even if it is not raining, expect 90%+ humidity day & night.
Just a couple of things for you to ponder.

  13. Thanks guys, lots to think about there.
There's just so much to do over there (been three times before, all in January)
Current thinking is Melbourne for Australia Day, drive to Sydney in a Bus, then fly up North and do the stuff up there.
Any recommendations of what to do and where to go plus of course what to avoid/not bother with, are gratefully received.

Depends which way you want to go, I'll put up a few ideas for you tomorrow if you like.
If you go the coastal road you may have problems getting accomodation (peak school holiday time) unless you want to wild camp, inland won't be quite as bad

Kakadu national park ,up the top Darwin .you can hire a 4x4with with a guide and just go and get lost for a week.camp just in bags under the stars, swim in fresh water lake,an rivers(that do have crocs in).no washing just living of the land.as the guide said the less you smell of lynx body spray and more of Marmitee your see loads more wild life.

  16. Having driven the melbourne to sydney coast road, and sydney to brisbane, i would rather drive sydney to brisbane as its a much nicerdrive with lots to stop and do.

The melbourne coast road is in trees alot, and beleive me, it gets boring looking at trees!!

    then fly brisbane to cairns.

Another thought is that it was cheaper to hire a bus away from sydney and finish in sydney, as other wise the hire firms have topay folks to move them back to sydney, we met a few couples that just drive campers between depots and get paid for it!

we were quoted $200 off to finish in sydney with Britz. so if your on a tight budget, it may be worth thinking about.

we got a really good deal through WWW.motorhomebookers.com last year, but they dont do kombi's

either way have fun, and dont set yourself too far to drive each day, as you will miss stuff and it will make it an endurance not a holiday, we aimed for 100 miles max a day in the plan, so some days ended up doing none, and others whizzed through 200 to get to something we fancied. Byron bay deserves a few days, just to chill and soak up the place. we are looking to move to around there in the near future, we enjoyed it that much.
