Helsinki fridge problems

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Clive Neilands, Apr 21, 2015.

  1. Fridge not working on gas so i removed the jet and blew it out,it was blocked but not anymore.
I did not use a pin to clean the hole.
I hold the gas button down for 30 seconds and then push the clicky button twice.
It still does not ignite,i know there is gas coming out of the pipe connected to the jet so thats ok.
The stainless tube has been cleaned and is like new.
I am getting a spark because i have seen a puff of flames every now and then...
Im fitting the tube with the slots upwards,it can go both ways but im sure the slots go up.It was up when i removed it.
The hole in the jet is very small but im sure this is right.
    Anybody can help?

  2. Did it work before?
They can sometimes be a complete pig to restart after a lay up.
Click it more than twice and hold the knob down for longer.
You should soon hear a really loud WHOOF!
And then the next time, if you still have hair, eyebrows etc
    It should light up ok.

  3. My old devon one took ages to light ,had to turn the knob and push in and hold for 10 secs then I would just keep clicking ,would light eventually.

  4. first you need to purge the system...there should be a bleed valve close to the actual gas button. This bleed valve is also used to test the gas delivery pressure (which shouldn't be an issue) and do a leak pressure test (as and when)

Once purged, you should be able to press and hold the gas button down and light it with a naked flame, or the spark ignition.
If it lights and goes out after about ten seconds after the gas button is released, you need to bend the thermocouple in towards the flame and clean the end up with wire wool (the thermocouple looks like a bit of bendy copper wire with solder on the end...as this heats up it ensures the gas supply valve stays open...if it's broken your fridge won't work)
Pretty sure the burner tube slots should face upwards
If the hole in the jet hs been enlarged, it won't prevent the flame from igniting but it will burn inefficiently

check that the flue pipe isn't blocked....
it could be that the piezo ignitor is weak...these lose their strength after a while, but if you clean up the terminal with a file or wire wool, and make sure the burner is clean, you should get a nice fat spark

the piezo electrode works like a spark plug, so if you're filing the tip, get some nice sharp edges on it, rather than rounded....

  5. [IMG]

typical layout for a gas fridge

  6. Excellent! You guys could not have explained it better! Thanks a million!

  7. Ok,its working! I removed the whole fridge and turned it upside down,i heard this is good for the fluid in it.
Bent the sparky thingy closer and it fires up everytime ,cleaned the thermocouple so its shiny too.
    Result!

  8. Good work. When you try it out for real in warm weather, check that it gets cold enough. Initially mine would only go down to 15 C on a hot day as I was running with a regulator which was giving too low gas pressure.

  10. Quick question ? how cold do these fridges actually get ? i've yet to try mine . Never seen one in action !

  11. When plugged in mine was very good! Yet to try it properly on a hot summers day on gas though.

  12. anything around 4 degrees C is good for a fridge....should get a thin layerof ice on the condensor plate after a couple of hours, in Summmer
