Hi my volt metre keeps pinging up past full volts this is accompanied by the wipers going faster lights brighter smell from heating and engine tone changing. Any one got any ideas? I'm running an alternator. Could it be the voltage regulator in the alternator and if it is what should I do?
Measure the voltage on your battery with the engine running. Should be about 13.5 - 14.5V. Any higher, and the alt regulator's likely packed up. Your battery is likely to be toast as well...
Does sound like the voltage regulator, but this could be internal or external to the alternator. Best find out which type of alternator you have and where the regulator is. This recent thread may be of use: http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/battery-sulphur-eggy-smell.32469/
