Help volt metre pinging

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by seanlithman, Dec 29, 2013.

  1. Hi my volt metre keeps pinging up past full volts this is accompanied by the wipers going faster lights brighter smell from heating and engine tone changing. Any one got any ideas? I'm running an alternator. Could it be the voltage regulator in the alternator and if it is what should I do?

  2. Measure the voltage on your battery with the engine running. Should be about 13.5 - 14.5V. Any higher, and the alt regulator's likely packed up. Your battery is likely to be toast as well...

What does the volt meter read when the engine isn't running? Does it fluctuate significantly ?

  4. It does sound like your alternator is overcharging
