Help! Should my spotlights switch off when I select dipped beam?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fronkjunior, Jan 15, 2013.

  1. Hi, I have a single fog light on the near side of my bumper and a single spotlight on the offside. They are connected to a 3 position switch, 1 is off, 2 is fog light only and 3 is for light and spot light together. This is all independent of the stock lighting.

Should these be wired so when they are on the spotlight (or perhaps the fog light too) switch off the when the dipped beam is used then back again on full beam? I do not want to blind on coming drivers with the spot light!

I imagine there would need to be some kind of relay to do so and a feed from the dipped beam to switch it?

Can anyone give me more of an idea how I can sort this please - in simple terms and pictures if possible?!?!?!?!?

    Thanks

The fog should only work with dip beam, spot only with full beam.

  3. Are you saying that they're wired like that already, or you want to wire them like that?

I'd just wire things so the spot just came on with main beam. You can take the feed from one of the high-beam feeds on the fuse box.

Fog light - doesn't really matter. For real fog, best to turn a set of good fogs mounted low down on, and drive on sidelights. Unfortunately, you're not allowed to do this any more .

  4. They are wired like I said at the moment. What Flakey says make sense. How do I wire them into the stock system to do that?

Take feed from full beam via a relay to spot light so it always comes on with full beam forget the seperate switch.
Take feed from dip via your switch and a relay to fog light so it can only be used with dip beam, switch should have a light to remind you when it's on!
