Help needed for my Landrover Discovery (sorry folks)!!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Imallowedout, Mar 23, 2013.

  1. I am looking for a friendly Landrover Forum to help me with a problem I have with my recently purchased - but old - Discovery. There doesn't seem to be any forums any where near as friendly as this one is :( On some of the forums the language is so bad and the comments are just disgusting!
Do any of you know of any nice-ish landie forums? Or have any members got a Series One Discovery? Mine keeps just randomly locking me inside - so I've name him Herbie. He laughs at me trying to get out! This is so embarrassing. When I pull up in a supermarket car park and try to get out - if I notice a person in a nearby vehicle, I often just drive to an isolated spot to try to free myself from the vehicle in privacy!!

When I lock or unlock the drivers door I can hear what I assume is the locking mechanism but it sounds so violent and loud and then there is a "Shhhh" sound about one second later..... Then when I'm inside happily driving about, the vehicle randomly locks me inside. This is a real pain. I used to just climb into the passenger side and get out but now I find that I can just lower the electric window, remove the key from the ignition put the key into the door lock via the open window, then I have to turn the key to lock the vehicle and then unlock the vehicle, then I can pull the internal door handle and it will open, then I have to put the key back into the ignition to put the electric window up and finally, I can get out!!!!! When it locks me in - there is no noticeable sound and the lock button does not move downwards.

Oh Jesh - I much prefer my uncomputerised campervan.....

Does it only lock the drivers door, does it have an aftermarket alarm?

It just needs a new central locking motor in the drivers door, that one has the 'brain' that operates the others. Quite a common fault on those often fails due to moisture ingress or just age.
    Any landy specialists near you?

  6. Hi davidoft - it is only the driver's door that is affected - all the other three seem to stay open. Don't actually know what alarm is has apart from "factory fitted". Thankfully the alarm does not go off at the moment!

  10. Thanks Flakey for replying. Do you think Herbie's brain has gone then?! Like I say, the other doors do not lock - it's just the driver's door. I bought a Haynes Manual for what it's worth but it's rubbish really (quelle surprise!). There is a Supplier near me "Foundry 4x4" but - they just see a woman and think "It's just a woman"... I do try my best to get over the lack of a man in my life - but hey ho... It's worth a try isn't it - to get a new central locking motor and try to fit it. Knowing my luck the entire alarm would go off and not stop for 312 hours. I can feel a match coming on (joke)!!

Don't know how to do links but search eBay ' land rover discovery central locking actuator motor'
You need the one specifically for the drivers door, when that works it'll operate the others as well!

i had landies for 21 years and have had 2 series 1 disco's - it's deffo the door actuator in the driver door, sometimes you can clean and spray with wd40 but a new one isn't dear on evilbay, never had a problem on forums, no forum is as "tame" as this but the ones i used were ok?
