Help my A Level students

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by daniel_son, Jan 17, 2014.

  1. Hi I have my A level students making a range of campervan furniture and need a few dimensions while my camper is tied up and I don't have access to it.

The main areas we need are the walkthrough dimensions between the seats (height, width, depth) and also the ash tray slot.

    Cheers in advance :)

  2. thats a bit loose really where from back? or front of seat ? height to where? depth from where to where? , what is the dim for ? can you put a sketch up of what you want with a ,b,c then we can get this right ? ash tray slot?

  3. Yer sorry Ill try and be more specific, I am actually posting this during a lesson with them. Sorry for being vague

  4. stay behind after and write , i must be more specific , 500 times

    minirob and Terrordales like this.
  5. A quick measure shows 710mm front to back of the actual walkthrough raised but with the mat removed. Width appears to be 395mm between the little fold round clips at the front of the pedestals (on my 79, anyway). Forgot to measure the height at the front of the pedestal before it starts its diagonal, but that first diagonal is 170mm (along the base line, not actual diagonal length), and then the heights of the pedestals also slope up, so about 220mm at the front to 275mm at the back (once again, with walkthrough mat removed).

You can see the front slope I'm talking about on this pic stolen from The Samba:

I forgot the ash tray slot - it's -12c out there at the moment and I got a little cold...

  6. ashtray opening is approx 85 mm wide by 45 mm deep with 5mm radius corners but what are you making ? as you can see theirs alot of different things you can measure between seats , i have a buddy box that is 310mm wide 480mm front to back and is 330 mm deep , if any of this is any good to you "sir":D:hattip:

  7. By the way, are you just using the students to kit out van for nothing o_O

If so, well done sir

  10. Hi all, many thanks for all your help, i knew I could rely on you guys. Ive directed my students here loads but as is with education now it ends up with the teacher doing the work  . I finished my lines and learnt my lesson . I have added arrows to the picture rally bug put up for th dimensions needed in order for my students to progress but feel rally bug has already given me the answers they need.

If students make good enough products I may consider using them buddy hawk, the benefit of being the teacher :D though if I really though about it the projects should be manufacturing replacement panels and how to repair a broken engine, maybe this could be the next project.

The actual project they are doing is manufacturing multipurpose products that fit into the cab area of a camper, bulkhead forward. At the moment we have a range of products from buddy seats/storage in the walkthrough area, underdash storage, modifications to door cards, and overhead storage. One student wanted to design a flip down tray that attached to the dash and we disscussed how some people might not want to put holes into the dash and screw into it. He saw the JK cup hold that fits in the dash slot and thought about that idea, hence the opening dimensions.

You guys have been really helpful and all this information provided will help them no end and will contribute to the actual grades so thank you again :D. The actual products are due to be started in the next few weeks and finished by easter (hopefully!) I will keep this thread updated with their builds and come easter will put photos of the finished products on here.

    Cheers

Buddy Hawks and fritt like this.
  11. This is a great idea, getting the kids to make something useful and probably marketable too! Remember to put some photos up.

  12. Good stuff - Remember if they are building items to fit the walkway that the seat belt mounts overhang that space.
