Hello, Joined the forum for some inspiration. Just about to take delivery of a 1972 T2 from California. Hoping that the sunny climate mean less rust! She has original paint, but looks like she has been sat outside for a few years and baked in the sun. Hoping to have her ready by next summer. Needs an interior and some TLC on the brakes and engine. Starts first time though so that bodes well. The only thing not on my side is TIME. 2 children and a dog mean that I will be spending a few nights during the week and the odd weekend working on her. So, thanks for having me and I'm sure I'll pick up some vital tips from the site. There will be some stupid questions asked but bear with me. Oh and before I forget......do I stay with the stock look or go for slighly lower with some nice alloys? Heard all sorts or horror stories about ride quality etc. Whatever I do I'm going to retain the original paintwork and wax the roof? (I even sound as if I know what I'm doing)
Welcome along - you will get many opinions on the height issue. I wouldn't go rushing into lowering and I like original wheels
How do I work in Chorley and there are other on here local to you also. Nice lookin to top does it have a sunroof? Stay with standard height. They look cool low but don't carry any weight properly including an interior or people.
Hi and welcome from Bolton. Standard ride height makes a huge difference when working under the van.mine was lowered slightly by the previous owner and recently found out how hard it was changing fuel hoses and whacking my starter with my mallet.
Hi and welcome. I'm also in the northwest near Manchester / Warrington. My opinion is stock height but each to their own.
That's good to know. No sunroof just a baked metal roof. Yes, the more I think about it the more I like the idea of standard height. Going to leave everything pretty much standard and spend my money on overhauling the brakes, engine and sourcing an interior......completely bare inside
Hi Doots....you're not a million miles from me.....just down the A6 near Westhoughton in fact....i'll look out for your bus as far as stock height or lowered, it's entirely up to you....I dropped mine a couple of inches to improve handling, rather than cosmetics....did it work? did it buggery.... personally, if it's a good original bus, i'd keep it stock..... and don't be overly concerned about asking questions....there's always someone who's been in the same boat at some point
Buying an empty bus can be a bonus as there are no hidden nasties all is easily seen. Mine was an empty Cali bus that had all brakes overhauled. There are some good vw people in Chorley. Wolfsburg vw in Withnell do some of the best busses in the country.
