Its getting to that time of year and I've finally decided I should fit the propex heater I've got lying about in the shed ,the question is can I safely fit it in a sealed box under my bus then cut into the long heating tube that runs the length of the bus so the propex can heat the van and de-mist the front screen, or is it better to put it under the rear seat and heat the bus that way, any suggestions appreciated

  2. Propex now make an "outside" version so I don't see why not.
It's something I am seriously considering on my next bus.
I would always advocate the fitting of a CO alarm along with any gas appliance.

I fitted mine just behind the front cross member but I don't intend to use it whilst driving, so ducted it straight into the walkthru. It was quite involved as I replaced both concertinas and the main tube. The cradle is easy to make from flat bar aluminium and some stainless stud.
For the air inlet for the Propex, I wanted to draw pre heated air , so made up a Y piece to connect the stock front section of ducting that runs to the totem.....pre heated air is now drawn thru the demister vents....

if you want to run the propex in tandem with the stock heating set up then I'd plumb the outlet into the front section (after the diverter) and wouldn't be overly concerned about a pre heated intake....

@Kruger has fitted his Propex under the driver's seat.....and I think @zed has done this recently.....it makes for a neat install and doesn't take up useable storage space...

I went for the under floor option because I wanted to keep noise levels down to a minimum...... 2014-04-01 16.48.40.jpg 2014-04-17 23.58.04.jpg

this pic shows the ducting arrangement...the top is the heat outlet to the walkthru, the middle is the pre heated intake the bottom is the main tube.... I bumped the main tube over one hole in the front crossmember and scrapped the original diverter.....you won't need to do this, but it makes for a neater fitting in my case

Mine (eberspacher, but essentially the same thing) is fitted where the wheel well was.

and ducted a few inches over the wheel tub and through to the interior. The top one then stops to draw cabin air back in for re-heating.

Until this weekend it then went straight to an outlet in the furniture.

This weekend I made a diverter from old heat exchangers and fitted it in the cupboard with the extra outlet straight down through the floor, then flexi over the chassis and through the rear crossmember and straight onto the existing long pipe. Heat exchangers are disconnected. Despite the long convoluted route it was toasty in the front on the way home this afternoon.

do you find the fan has enough power to get to the windscreen
I am looking to move mine rather than get the engine heating working
