Heating - winter is coming!!

  1. Afternoon,

For some reason a long weekend in the lakes at the end of July has made me think of winter... can't think why.

Last winter I had no heating as the HEX were knackered, and the rest of the pipe work hanging off. At best I managed to achieve heat output equivalent to some heavy breathing. My family were underwhelmed.

New (1600) engine and VW HEX in the van now though, so some serious heat coming out of them to play with. A quick audit under the van shows the 'Y' piece is rusted to some tetnus causing shreds, and the only other bit I have is the long pipe (the card version) which is not in great shape. Even the cables are missing for HEX control.

So I need a way of getting the heat into the van.

Spend some time on The Samba looking at nutters crazy ideas, which has given rise to the following idea - seems popular in the states:

    1) Remove Y piece and skin from fingers/knuckles.

    2) Take 50mm pipe from one HEX and feed it under the rear seat, to give heat in the back. Put a locally operated flap on it to cut heat off as required.

    3) Run 50mm silicone pipe from other HEX through the big tube (like a giant conduit) to near the front, through a booster fan and into the totem pole.

Looking at parts, I think I can do this more cheaply than returning to stock, and I could do the long runs in single pieces of pipe removing the numerous joins etc over the stock system. According to a few militant types over on The Samba splitting the HEX outputs improves heat output into the van.

Anyone got any thoughts on the above?

  4. It's only metal and it's rotten anyway. You can always put it back to stock if you want to later on- but your plan will indeed work.
The only reason it'd be more effective than stock is 'cos you've put a second fan in it :) but it wouldn't be noticably worse.
