Heater control cable attachment

  1. Does anyone have any pictures of heater control cable attachment both in the cab and at the valves. It's a '73 Bay with type 4 engine.

Both mine have snapped. I've got new cables and the valves are free.

However the last owner bodged the cables so i'd like to see how it was done originally.

There seem to be two steel tubes passing from the cab and terminating near the heater valves. Were these for the original cables.

The new cables have both an outer and inner. Is the idea that this whole assembly runs inside the steel tube or should it be cable tied along side

Also, at the valve, there is a steel bracket with a plastic moulding to terminate the cable. However, if I terminate the cable in this moulding it would have to take a very sharp bend to reach the valve arm.

All-in-all there is something not quite right.

picture of where you looking to terminate it as it sounds wrong, yes the complete cable runs inside the steel tube

  3. I think I have worked out some of the problems.

    1) The steel tube has been bent out of alignment

    2) The bracket has also been bent out of alignment

If I bend the bracket and tube back it looks as though the end of the tube would direct the cable into the cable stop. The inner cable would then pass though the stop and gaiter and connecto the valve lever.

    I think!

  4. I think I've sussed it.

In the picture, I pulled the small white plastic moulding out of the end of the steel pipe. It is a push fit in the pipe and has a shoulder on it. It also has a split along its length so it can be clipped over the inner cable as shown.

Thus, the whole cable assembly is slid down the steel tube from the cab. At the engine end, the small while moulding is clipped over the inner cable and pushed back into the steel tube to act as an end stop for the outer cable. The large white moulding is then pushed over the outside of the steel tube to form a seal (there is an o-ring in it). Then one end of the rubber gaiter is streched over the moulding and the other end is streched over the metal sleeve on the inner cable.

    Quite neat really.

I damaged the small white moulding pulling it out of the tube. I'll machine another one up and have to machine a copy of the larger moulding as one is missing. I'll make a note of the dimensions if anyone needs to make themselves one.

yup your right, its all been bent about for some one to run the cable in thee wrong place, bend them until they are in the right line to operate the lever

  6. On one of mine the heater cable has seized inside the Steel guide tube So we had to run heater cable alongside the steel tube and zip tie in place.... Could it be that that's what's going on with yours?
