Heater blower fan

  1. Hi,
I've got issues with my heater blower fan as I cant get it to operate!
I've tested the fan with a direct feed from the battery and it spins like a good un. I have a live feed from the battery and the inline fuse is good. I have power from the regulator when the engine is running and I can get the solenoid to click by fitting a direct earth to it (the earth should be supplied from the switch on the heater control leaver). I initially thought that the earth from the heater control was at fault and I'm still not sure if this is the case?, however with a direct earth from the battery the solenoid clicks. I have power out of the solenoid to the fan but the fan wont kick in, strangely when I disconnect the earth to the motor the output from the solenoid stops...

I'm not a sparky but can usually work my way through things, any ideas would be welcomed or do I put a rocker switch on the dash and wire it direct with an inline fuse and bypass the solenoid?

    Ta.

I think the heater control switch supplies a positive feed to the fan, not an earth.

    No, it supplies an earth

  5. The fan set up is as per vw intended, I have a wiring diagram for the blower and all seems as it should be, what's puzzling is that when I disconnect the earth from the motor, which should be a direct earth, the output stops from the solenoid?

The relay needs an earth, have you got the earth wired correctly? The earth is for the relay and fan I think, but need to see to jog my memory

  7. Its bizarre because if I put a direct earth on the 31 terminal on the solenoid it clicks. With the engine running I have output on J but the fan wont run. If I disconnect the earth (from the loom) on the fan the output from J stops??? I'm sure you are right! Too much whisky after wine at lunchtime. I vaguely remember having quite a job wiring a dashboard led into the circuit to indicate when the fan was running. Think I had to take a positive supply from the front fusebox to make it work.
