Just a quickie, I am going to replace j tubes on my 1776 with heat exchangers, can you do it with the engine in or is it necessary and /or easier to drop it?

  2. Ok to do with the engine in. Jack the back up a bit.

  3. actually easier to do with the engine in IMO....but then again, I do have small child-like hands and a set of magic spanners

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    Another vote for easier in.

  5. Doesnt it depend on how rusty your nuts are.

A selection of different 13mm spanners may help.

Put both nuts on and wind them down the exhaust studs together as you might not be able to get the bottom nut on the stud if the top one is tight already.
Also dont tighten the nuts before you centre up the heat exchangers at the front on the studs so you can get one of your collection of spanners on both nuts.
Make sure the torque on both nuts is even and they are reasonably tight. Otherwise you get annoying loud leaks.
