Heat exchangers

  1. I'm just gathering bits for my engine and is there a rule on heat exchangers ? Ie when they need changing or what will happen if I use the ones on there !! Iv got a cj code 2.0l type 4 engine ?? Any recomendations !!

  2. I am told that the general rule is keep the originals unless they leak exhaust gas into the van. I replaced mine ( also 2.0litre cj) with some new aftermarket ones which I got for a good price on eBay. Still get good heat in the van and they don't stink of 30 odd year old car anymore.

if they are original and not too rusted or can be repaired then original is best as they have more fins inside so warmer, try to buy the european style of exchangers with the 2 holes in each end for the exhaust as you'll have more exhaust options, the american ones are single exit triangular and harder to find exhausts for.

  4. Some 1 told me they can put nasty gases through the heating system ? How true is this !!

if the exhaust itself is leaking into the heat exchanger casing and pipework this is correct.

  6. Iv got a new exhaust so am I best to clean them up and see if they smell !! Cheers for the advise to just don't wanna waste money and it be worse !!

I just replaced my new vwh type 1 hxs for 40 year old ones that were repaired by a top guy on here and think I made the right decision. They are so much warmer and no nasty smells either:thumbsup:

it's not just the smell -that's usually the oil it's the carbon monoxide too..... put some pic's up of what you have that will help, although the internals could be damaged allowing exhaust gasses into the exchanger box it's usually bad sealing of pipes etc that lets gas in.
