Headlight beam pattern MOT failure

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by T2Nev, Mar 29, 2017.

  1. My 1973 bay has failed its MOT because the beam pattern is poor and the mechanic is saying it would dazzle the oncoming traffic.

Ive recently replaced the reflector bowls because its been an advisory the last couple of MOT's but everything else looks original. This is the first MOT i've had to put it through so I do not know anymore of the history.

The mechanic seems to think the glass isn't compatible with the bowl, is this possible?? We have rotated the bowl 90deg but the beam pattern is still poor.

The mechanic is stumped why and hasn't really given me any options...

I am tempted to buy a 1 screw head lamp (see link below) as the front panel has been replaced so it has the lugs to secure it to.

Does anyone have any advice or word of wisdom before I go ahead and buy them?

  3. Obvious point, but...you have got RHD headlights?

  4. Yes they are RHD headlights. Ive ordered some of the 1 screw type, if there is no difference i will send them back.

  5. Should be fine

  6. Change your MOT tester. Mine just says " switch your lights on -side/ dip/main - OK)

  7. we need a picture..

my reflectors are on the chrome , the glass is clear...

  8. you probably need to change yours ,without the height adjustement you could be pointing to the moon ...:D

This is just a suggestion since I fell for it once myself after changing a reflector. Is the bulb correctly orientated? The filaments aren't central so if it's anything off upright it'll throw the beam out. On those crappy old P45t mounts it's easily done especially if combined with a crappy cheap pattern reflector bowl.

Edited to add that if the domed inner cap reflector - which apparently aren't needed if using a halogen as they have black tips - is still fitted but loose I'm guessing that might mess the beam up a little.

funnily enough our MOT man says the same, he does like wheel bearings though, he always gives ours a good wobble!

I am amazed that a '73 bay would have enough candlepower to dazzle a moth let alone any oncoming traffic!

  13. Probably but I don't drive at night!

  14. Old mot station used to complain about mine every year and then pass it anyway. New place adjusted one of em a coupl of years ago but nowt since. They must have magically sorted themselves out!

  15. Had exactly this with my beetle (same headlights as a van) - one MOT test it failed on poor beam pattern. When you stick it on the magic headlight checking machine the pattern looks weird, but up against a wall it looks like the pattern in the Haynes manual. Changed tester and all was fine again.

If you have had then apart to change the reflectors check:

    1) The reflector is in the right way up, so that the cutout is in the right place for the bulb to sit the right way up
    2) The lens is the right way up.

  16. Mine failed on the same thing
    It was the bulb orientation.
