Headlamp in Bowl Fixings - wrong ones!

  1. This van fights me at every stage!

If it's not hard enough rewiring it, I come to fit the headlamps and the fixings in the new front panel bowls bear no resemblance to the old ones. Seem to be clips, it would appear, rather than screw tabs.

Could any one send a picture of what the screw tabs look like, with dimensions from the front of the bowl etc? Looks like I'll need to make some up and weld them in (with new paint surrounding them, of course!) It's a 1979 RHD, with H4 lamps going back in.

    Ta!

You found the same issue as us then. We came to fit a pair of new Hella headlamps to Majors replacement front panel, they didn't line up correctly - whereas they did on the old one. Luckily there was room on the tabs to drill for self tapping screws.

Just wait till you try fitting the chrome headlamp surrounds

  3. I used mk1 golf headlamps from heritage. They lined up to the three tabs on my newish front panel.

Are you saying there’s no tabs for the screws at all? Or are they just folded back out of the way for protection so they don’t get damaged prior to fitting? I imagine if there was a stack of ‘em waiting to be shipped and flogged, the bowls would all be inside one another, and the screw tabs would be folded back out of the way? Just a thought.

  5. Thanks for this - yes, they had been folded back and the holes filled with paint! They are in the wrong place though, but I've found some interesting stuff on The Samba which will help me make my own.

I then looked at the headlamp surround - yep, that will be fun as well! Will need to weld in another tab..... Fundamentally, the headlamp bowl fixings bear no resemblance at all to the front panel that came off

And screwing in the headlamps was supposed to be on the the easiest jobs!
