I've finally got around to fixing the oil seal leaks on my1971 Danebury fitted with a T4 2 litre engine. When I took the rocker cover off I noticed one of the bolts holding one of the rockers in place had snapped leaving a piece in the head, it is too short to get anything on it so it looks as if I'm going to have to take the head off, Can this be done without taking the engine out?
Also why do you think this bolt had snapped ?

  2. which side? you can get right hand side one off with a bit of messing. The upper tinwear has to come off, to get at the bolts. it's a bit of a faf but can be done. I havent done the other side with the oil cooler so not sure if this can be done or not.

i'd imagine it broke by being tightened just a gnats chuff past "all the way til the threads strip then back half a turn" (copyright @Top Banana Racing ) the M7? nut that hold the rocker on usually strips 1st - as said you can faff and do the offside one in situ.

Moons and Top Banana Racing like this.

I've managed to drill it out with the engine in,Should I tap a new thread in or use a helicoil?

you can buy stepped thread studs if you can retap it would be better, there's a thread running on here somewhere about stepped studs for exhaust that has done the same.

  6. If you can find an oversized stud I recon that's the best approach otherwise it's a Helicoil / time sert (expensive!).

I did find this; it's no good to me but might work for you ;)

I'm unsure of the standard threadof the rocker stud on the 2.0ltr though, the exhaust is m9x1.25 but that doesn't help you :D
