Hi all, I'm trying to fit a rear lower quarter panel but there was a big gap between it and the wheel arch panel..So I cut it back even further and put the J shaped piece in the gap and tacked it.. I've had to cut the tacks and reposition it since the photo. Just doesn't look right... What am I doing wrong?
Is the small bit you tacked in got the 90* angle on it to weld to the rear arch panel? And would get yourself some intergrips. Little clamps that keep the lines in your welding perfectly straight. They have been a great help to me, saves a lot of faff! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380557012272?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
WHS ^^^ ....the inter grips are great for that sort of repair Those lower corners arnt that great as far as panels go TBH, they seem to bulge out a little too much ....doesnt look like your too far off though, ....the 'J' piece looks like it twists outwards a bit too much at the bottom (hard to tell from the pics), I would get it following the profile of the rear arch as closely as possible and then fettle the lower corner to meet it (rather than getting things to line up to the lower corner panel), the 'J' piece might be a little too low?.......a little tweeking and it'll come good
The J pieces aren't folded quite to 90 degs and so make too much of a valley between the panels. Same goes for the end of the rear arch panel. You need to adjust them. The rear corners are also pants which doesn't help.
Hi, thanks for the replies Yes the J piece has the 90*ish angle and I do have some intergrips.. Since this photo I have cut some of the tacks and re-positioned the J piece a little bit better.. All edges have been joggled. Zed you are 100* correct.. the rear corners are pants. But generally, do you all think I'm doing this job the right way?
Looks alright from the angle shown? Main thing is that the light hole lines up and is level, the flat part next to the engine lid is flat, and the curves flow as they should without a bulge or a waist at the join. They seem infinitely adjustable. lol
As above. I find it easiest to start with the light pressing. Get that lined up, then adjust everything else, including the edge next to the engine lid/outer valance if necessary. The pressing is sometimes terrible, so take your time.
All the curves look good to the eye and are reasonably flat.. The rear light hole is ok.. I've been fitting removing and refitting the rear light as I go.. The flat edge next to the engine lid seems ok, I've been using big welding magnets to keep it in place. Many thanks all of you I was expecting you to say that's a complete **** up
