Have you been to a mountain stage in le tour?

  1. As the title says, but im trying to find out when the road will be closed prior to the race coming up the mountain, is it just before the caravan goes up or is it first thing in the morning? Im hoping to get to a mountain stage, ideally we would camp on the mountain beforehand buit that's not possible, and if the road closes first thing and we have to be up there early, with two very small children, being stuck on a mountain side for an entire day may not be a good idea. So im kinda hoping the road is closed just before and only be up there for a few hours........any idea?

I've never done but it's summat i really wanna do, I think people get there the day before to get their spots then just camp overnight waiting for the riders to go by, I've read it's one big party :) they then miss a days racing and go to the stage the day after to do it all again, Next year I'm lucky coz my Auntie owns a farm in the yorkshire dales that borders the route and Le tour is passing twice in two days so im gonna be camping there, Might even try and sort summat out for anyone thats interested

  3. Yes in the Pyrenees. Near Cauteres outside Lourdes. it was amazing to see how fast those guy's come down the passes. apparently you cant get accommodation in the dales for love or money. People are renting their houses out. also they are going to resurface all the roads on the circuit. Was chatting to the guy in the cycle shop in Settle last weekend.

It is gonna be cool though.

  4. depends how popular the mountain is ,some peaks get closed two days before they come ,most are still open if you want to go up on ya bike...

At lot of big mountains have cafe`s shops etc...

I don`t think you are going to have bored kids ....

    which mountains?

btw been to about 10 stages up the mountains..

  5. I'm off there tomorrow morning. To Chiniallon nr Bourg St Maurice. Me and mates on superbikes. Glorious roads, full off twisties and hairpins. Knee down action abound.

  6. Cheers. It the mountain finish on stage 8 (Pyrenees). we are camping about 2 hours away so could arrive there mid morning but I reckon its already going to be mobbed by that time. Maybe walk some of the way up. I would of cycled up but I don't think the wife and two small chimpanzees will agree with me!

  7. Never been up the Col de Pailhères ,I better put it on my to do list....

Sometimes it is much better at the lower sections ,you get a better view and it is more chilled...

The kids will love chasing for all the freebies when the cavalcade goes by ....

  9. I don't mind being lower down, just as long as I can still get there mid/late morning ish! Don't wanna be right at finish as it will be chocka with crazy Spaniards being in the Pyrenees and usually the dutch are posted near the finish and they are mental! ( nO offence to any dutch or Spaniards on here )! Just looking out for my little ones, youngest is only 10 months!
