My lad is doing music composition at uni and asked me for ideas on unusual instruments as he has to write and perform a piece on one , i thought for a while and then i knocked this up as i remembered seeing one years ago - not bad for a first attempt , it sounds ok and holds the the strings taught but i will be making a better one next week when the tuning keys come. Here it is i think i will call this " the prototype " it really does sound good and cost about £7 to make i have a nice tin to make a more refined one soon
Perhaps not so unusual, my friends and myself have got together an upright base made from a t-chest ,length of wood and some string ,also one of friends plays? the washboard, with thimbles on fingers this "group >>> (to include accoustic guitar , harmonica and anything else lying about) does not sound great but is fun.
TA - You need a good solid bit of wood for the neck , i used a old table leg , you can get tuning keys on ebay for about £5 or less and strings for £2 the rest i had lying around , i should have set the tuning keys into a stronger bit of solid wood if i am totally honest as the ply has moved slightly forward under the strain and i reckon it will be out of tune very quickly , as i say - prototype ! Good luck with yours
yes that is what i remember them being made from years ago Don , i saw this variation at a music festival a few years back and realised it was the same idea
When I was 12-13 I made a Les Paul with frets, pickups and everything. It weighed a ton, you could hardly get your hand round the neck and was exceptionally rubbish! Kept me off the streets though...
He has a Les paul custom ,also a Martin accoustic , a vega ( Martin -company ) a Epiphone dot and two nice other guitars - and i am making him a couple from biscuit tins do you think he will thank me Ste ?
Nice and chilled dude i even managed a few hours kip in the warmth of the sun saturday afternoon I picked up a flywheel locking tool, oil filler kneck removal tool and a clutch aligning tool so that saved me a bit of postage Met up with a few late bay member visiting for the day today I also noticed a theme starting with t4 vans
That Heroes tin guitar looks really good - not bad for £7! Reminds me of the guitar that Seasick Steve had, made from a Morris Minor hub cap.
Yes, it'll still be fun to try and get a tune out of it, but shouldn't he be doing this himself? As you're not having frets, maybe a violin would be more playable?
the assignment will be - write and play a tune on a unusual instrument ? They play these with a steel slide mate
google "seasick steve" and see some of the instruments he has made and plays - may give you inspiration.
Look for diddley bow on youtube for more inspiration, and while were on about home made instruments check out my mate Dave with his home made foot operated drum kit. The guy is genius
