I had this on a previous bus, I would say handbrake adjustment is the best place to start.

All my gearchange bushes have been changed and the gate has been welded where it was worn. Easy to get into gear and nowhere near the handbrake. No need for fancy shifters, just needs to be returned to the way VW intended

I need people like you because I always start to look for aftermarket bits when sorting out what you have is going to be the better - and cheaper - option.

Drove my first UK bus today and it had this. Total pain. l think it must afflict RHD buses because my LHD has never had it even when the gear linkage was sloppy.
think it is my uk bus is like it my us might not be tell you when i take it up a hill
