Hand brake cable rear question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Nicolasticity, Nov 26, 2021.

  1. is there a rubber seal in the brake plate as the cable enters and is there a part that holds the cable end fixing to the brake lever or does it just fit over - bit dazed and confused?

Having real problems too with the spring and pin that holds the brake shoes they seem too wide and I only get about 6mm of pin to crush the spring too -time for some time out me thinks?

Think the outer ( handbrake) cable has a rubber end that fits into the backplate.

With regard to the brake retaining pins and springs, I bought a pack of new bits from JK, ended up refitting old parts ... think later in the Bays production, VW dropped the fitting of springs altogether.

I dont think there is a seal on the brake cable.
The far end just hooks over the lever on the rear shoe.
The springs between the shoes provide tension on the lever to stop the cable jumping off, along with the spring round the cable holding the cable straight, so it cant rotate off the hook..

Fixing pins... dont bother it wont fall apart, VW deleted them as the shoes sit about 1mm from the backing plate by themselves, all the springs and pins do is push them slightly off true at rest. The pins are only just long enough..

  4. thanks - my shoes are resting on the backing plate (I hate setting these drum brakes) and I guess they find there own centre

  5. They will centre up if you operate the brake with the drum on.
