Hammerite smooth finish Yes/No???

  1. Hi all,

I just thought I would check before I make a big boo boo, is hammerite smooth finish an acceptable paint finish for areas that you cant see on the inside my bay? i.e the floor and round the engine hatch or ideally does it all need to be primed and painted in the original colour? even though it will be covered by ply and carpet?

    Please advise

    Thank you

Have a look for something like Rustoleum. Can be mixed in any colour and rollered.

  4. its Marmitee

  5. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Not only is it Marmitee, it reacts with proper paint so once it's on it's nothing but trouble.

  6. Oh crap. All my tinware is painted in that.

  7. and it has a tendency to crack on large panels.

  8. My cab floor is painted in white smooth hammerite and has caused no problems so far. Yes, I now know it's crap, but at the time I was a noob and had only just got the bus. It was an improvement on red oxide primer, anyway.

  12. rollered it on, only did a few think coats so it didn't really fill any gaps, a thicker coat might have

  14. You wont be dissapointed with the rustoleum combi colour and you can get it mixed to specific vw shades aswell

  15. I also hammerited my van when i was a noob, just the bottom of the cargo floor and sills and chassis rail, the i found out it was meant to be carp and everyone should use por15, but i checked it carefully this summer and it's absolutely perfect after nearly ten years and i keep reading reports of por15 coming away from properly preped panels in sheets and rust creeping under it. I think if you degrease properly hammerite's ok.

  16. Smooth is better tha hammerd but dont use the silver

I use tractor enamel for bits and bobs nowadays and when done properly its better than 2 pack paint

Hammerite is for garden gates, as has been said it often reacts to other paints, shrinks and crinkles up, flakes off etc etc, my opinion is its just a very well marketed brand, as the paint is Marmite.

  18. Those that know me on here now that i like to do things properly
Ill chusk a few pics below of some parts that were media blated and acis dipped then acid etched and sparayed with hammerite silver mixed with hammerite thinners from a gun and compressor

All the components showed corrosion on the surface within a month

Hammerite is rubbish and only belongs on garden gates at best

Everything you see in silver colour in those pics was painted with hammerite smooth and its Marmitee

My bus is with paul weeding at the moment for a respray and a few custom touches but i sure if you asked him he would take pictues of the silver hammerited components and how poor they protect

Next year all the components that are silver will be grey and done in tractor enamel and i know they wont rust up in the entire time ive got left on this earth
