Oh wow! we've just got the name and put in a google search and it's still trading as a huge VW/Audi/Seat dealership called Gilder's and from their own website; "1953 J.Gilder & Co. Ltd., trading as Gilders, becomes the first Volkswagen dealer in the UK and sells the very first VW Beetle on British shores" Is the Ecclesall Rd site still there? Going to get in touch to see if they have anything on Wilma!
wow gilders is really near us. they did move from eccelesall road not sure if they've moved twice but the site they were on last on eccy road ( a localism for you there ) is still vacant bek- this is like the tv who do you think you are !!!!!
we are sooooo excited!!! Going to contact them to see if they have any old pics of the 70's dealership etc, Wilma was imported to Gilders on 18th June 1973 but not sold until '74. Being an automatic she may have been a display vehicle for orders. Can't wait to get any info. This is why we were doing the resto for her 40th, we had visions of tracing her roots. Would love to go to the local big library with microfiche and trawl through car ads from the period, Gilders would have had ads. Do you still have to go through microfiche's or are local papers on computer now?
Isnt Volkswagen in Sheffield on the Chessie end of Bochum Parway (next door to Audi) - they used to have a Split Screen on show there when I used to use them?
