gears a bit notchy - 2nd hard to find - new oil?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Apr 30, 2013.

  1. Hi,

Had a second hand g'box fitted and gears are a bit notchy going in, especially second (somtimes you can't seem to find second at all).

Taken it back to the guy who put the 'box in and he moved the plate under the gear stick over a little - now it's a bit easier to get 2nd gear but still you have to wait a couple of seconds before it'll slide into 2nd.

Adjusted the clutch cable in quite a bit so it bites quite high up the pedal - made no difference.

Doesn't cruch into gear, just notchy going in, so doesn't appear to be a syncro problem?

Could it be the fact that it has new (EP90) gearbox oil in?

Wife had her Jazz gearbox rebuilt and we had the same problem with 2nd gear - guy replaced the g'box oil with thinner stuff and it solved the problem.

Anyone found this or any other suggestions?

This is quite normal grub , 2nd is a bit of a knack on most bays , they were even when they were newer .

If you think it is a issue try having another go at the plate at the bottom of the stick

  3. Your oil is fine. Did you change the rear coupling and front bush on the linkage?

With a bit of fiddling with the plate, should go into any gear fine.

  4. ^whs. I went through a nightmare spell with mine where 2nd was impossible to select. Slackened off the bolts on the plate and played around with it and problem solved - I didn't need to change any bushes. Still needs a fair old yank, but big improvement.

  5. Check for leaks and check the oil level, i had a problem with new oil after draining but after a couple of miles it was fine, and as all have said check rear coupling for wear, hindsight is a wonderful thing but it probably would have been a good move to have replaced all the bushings whilst the gearbox was out.

  6. replaced both the rear coupling (with a good quality one) and also the front bush while the g'box was out.
Should I replace the front plate under the gear lever and do you reckon fitting a quick shift gear lever (or even one of those plastice quick shift kits for a few quid) would sort the problem and probably be a bit more driveable?
if so, any suggestions on make - i would guess the empi is probably the cheapest but not the best?
    Cheers peeps..

quick shifts can be worse , i would just realine the plate ( mess about with it until it works better )

  8. thanks peeps - will try moving the plate about and also check the oil level - can anyone tell me off the top of their head the size of allen key I need for the oil filler plug.

    Many thanks

You'll still have to wait for it to go into second, it's the box not the linkage. Apply a little pressure and it'll slip in when it wants to. I can't remember driving one that wasn't like this to some extent.

  10. Just changed my gearbox oil had exactly the same problem, bit of tinkering with the plate and its all good now :)

  11. What you said just there Zed ,re it being the box, by that do you mean its a built -in design fault or it ends up that way thru use? this 2nd gear selection prob ,which i experience 2 ,has to be nailed ! ta 4 opinion.

I meant the "wait patiently" bit. I regard mine as pretty good. I could force it straight into second quickly, but it would clonk and I kinda know it would be bad for it in the long run. If I just apply a little pressure and wait perhaps 1 second at the most, it slips in nicely. (ooer missus).
If you can't find it at all it's the plate or worn linkage.

  13. Thats what mines like - just keep gentle pressure on it - just a second and its in1

  14. what oil you all using in your gearbox - EP90?
