Gearbox??

  1. Am planning on changing my gearbox oil tomorrow. Other than checking I can undo the filler first, are there any other tips for doing it? E.g should I get the engine hot first to help with the draining of the oil like when doing the engine oil?
    Thanks.

  2. Assuming you wil be on level ground ,once you reckon you have filled box to correct level, because you can see its starting to run out and down the side of box ,leave it to settle 4 approx 10 mins and check level again(because of all the air bubbles created when you squishing bottle sides ) and yeah ,run bus round block beforehand.

  3. a quick drive around should help loosen it up a bit, but if it has been in there for 30+ years its going to be thick and gravy like, when I did mine, I double changed it, got some elcheapo oil and then ran that for 20 mins and then changed it for some synthetic GL4, the flushing oil looked much older than it was, defo worth while

  4. I have been hijacked here hahaha :) it doesnt go away but the sound changes slightly when the clutch is pressed / released.

  5. Thanks guys.

  6. my box whined in every gear but would disappear when i pressed the clutch down turned out it was the main shaft bearing it was knackered you can get to the bearing without stripping the hole box down when the box is out the van, so may be worth checking. heres a link to mine i had to make the bearing as at the time i did the box i could not get one from anywhere but believe they are back in stock now. this may not be your problem but worth a look
