Well guys after finally getting to grips with my shaft @snotty yesterday, fitting the new parts, steel shift ball and nose cone seal to the nose cone ( parts Supplied by Bears Motorsports 0121 742 2200 ) fitting the nose assembly back on the gearbox and treating the box to an oil change I decided today was the day the engine and gearbox was going back into Mr Peabody. So up with the larks and full steam ahead I made good progress until the heavens opened, ah well I will carry on as it’s only a passing shower I thought.....oops don’t think I will make a very good weather man.....still now I was soaked through I just ploughed on emerging like a drowned rat from under the bus but more importantly with the engine and gearbox fitted and all ancillaries on I crossed my fingers and fired the bus up and selected 1st gear.........it was as smooth as snake Marmitee.....so off down the road I trundled with a big cheesy grin on may face, 1st,2nd,3rd then into 4th....oh happy days so once again a big thank you to all that have contributed to my quest “to find the missing 1st gear” @snotty @zedders @mikedjames @77westy to name but a few And finally just want to say I’m loving the gold!!
Thanks for the idea @snotty, though I did make one subtle change (because I ran out of gold paint.....doh) the nose cone remained silver so I was kind of left with a two tone thing going on. I’m quite surprised no one picked up on it actually
Oops meant to take a picture, will see if I can find them. The Shuttlecock at gearbox end wasn’t too bad, but changed it anyway, front one was a mess, had to faff about to get the replacement one to fit, not very well made, very poor factory moulding. Now that the gear selection issues seem to be sorted I’m considering putting the “Empi” shifter back on.....if I can find it just to see how slick the selection might be now and I think they look better than the old original stick shifter.
If you are putting the EMPI back on, change the rivets holding the base together for bolts through.. it's embarrassing sat at a pelican crossing with a gearstick in your hand.. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
I have only just made it to the end of the thread - couple of comments about the steel ball. I don’t believe you need to remove the gearbox to change it , in fact I know we did two in a couple of my vans this way . Awkward but doable. When I say we I mean Andy Alexander RIP who was an apprentice at St Johns Wood in the 60’s and knew all the shortcuts on these things. I tried to buy some Of the balls from Cogbox but he refused as it was doing himself out of business. Go figure. They are made in the US I believe .
You should have. You may end up with only one kidney, but you do have a Berg shifter, which is better.
Also Bugpack/ Empi I think https://www.v-dubstore.com/empi-bugpack-b506110-t2-irs-steel-shift-ball-p/b5-0611-0.html Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Made by Weddle and as you say also sold by Empi/Bugpac, and other retailers including a couple in Europe. Notice the difference in price.
It was a struggle and I had to trim some of the moulding residue from them but once I had done that and got them looking like the ones I had taken out they went back in Ok. Fitting the empi back in the old girl today
If only I had Berg money......but alas no my pockets don’t run that deep so the empi is going back on and now that I have found that pesky 1st gear what could possibly go wrong now?
Worth adjusting your handbrake to the regulation five clicks, so you can do hill starts with the EMPI.
