Hi all, Needing to top up gearbox oil, just wondering what type to use. Also anyone used an additive such as Molyslip? Thinking because of the age of the box , might be helpful? Lastly what do you use to fill it. Because obviously can't get in from above. Cheers for any advice. Thanks Mike
Sytrans best oil for the box, IMHO. Best to drain the lot. Filled from the side using a squeezy bottle. I'd avoid Molyslip.
^^^^ this is an essential tip! Use a VERY well fitting hex bit. clean out the hex hole so that the bit will sit as deep as possible. they are often full of gunk. Tap it into the nut before applying any torque at all.
Thanks for advice, got the filler hex out and have cleaned this up. Will drain and go from there. Was wondering if I'd need some sort of pump or syphon to fill it. If I can get a squeezy bottle in from the side, should be good enough. Will have to look up the capacity.
Buy a gallon of gearbox oil and buy a small top up bottle that has a little filler spout and keep filling that until it's all topped up and keep it for next time .
Sytrans is well worth the extra dosh. Gear changes definitely easier when box is cold, you will notice it.
i think these were filled for life, Don't think they expected them to be on the road 40 yrs+ later, I got my mot man to do mine drain and refill,
Use Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75w-90, it might not give you 6 gears but you will notice the difference. Forget Molyslip.
I bought a silverline giant oil syringe of eBay for about £7 to fill mine , I use it for topping up the engine oil as well .Great for all kinds of sucking and blowing !
