Gearbox oil plug

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by pyroking, Feb 27, 2013.

  1. Anyone got any good ideas for freeing up a seized plug on a '74 gearbox? The last person who tried to change the oil in the box broke their spanner trying to get it out - and then gave up...

...But I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to change that oil now and also that applying vast quantities of heat to a metal box full of oil might be a very bad plan.

    Any ideas?

  2. Get yourself down machine mart and buy a long breaker bar, or if you can find a scaffold pole use that on the end of your longest socket arm. Its a Illegitimate child but worth doing if you're replacing the gearbox fluid. I used Castrol Synth Trans.

  3. Give it some heat first from a blowtorch - it's not going to burst into flame - then undo it with a 17mm hex socket on a reasonable length bar (take it easy).

  4. Keep soaking it in plusgas then slightly tighten the filler plug to crack the corrosion before unwinding a little
Keep rocking back and forth a little at a time whilst adding more plusgas

  5. thanks for the advice...I might see if the buys at the garage can at least crack it open tomorrow when it's on the MOT ramp  otherwise I'll be getting friendly with the driveway again!

  6. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Ramp good idea - more room to swing the breaker bar.
