Gearbox gusher.

  1. Was just about to feel pleased with myself for fixing an oil leak when I found gearbox oil pouring out of the selection end of things. Couldn't get a clear look as the van is currently chocked up on wooden blocks but does anyone have any ideas on what is happening?
This is a van myself and a mate have bought and on inspection it has obviously been leaking for a while as it's caked onto the box.
    I've a horrible feeling it's an engine out scenario...[IMG][IMG]

Could be leaking from the little oil seal in the bushing right at the rear of the box ...where the gear selecter rod enters the box .
Awkward but i believe doable without taking engine and box out ...quite a lot of oil there so possibly not that .
A picture a bit further away from what you have taken might make it just a bit clearer as to where exactly the problem might be .

Nope. Take engine and gearbox out. Then its an easy job. I really scored the selector shaft on mine trying to do it in place, as there isnt enough room to get a grip on the seal. Then I had to peen over the mess with a ball peen hammer when I got it out. It also gave me a chance to go inside and change the plastuc gear selector donut that wears out on the end of the 'hockey stick' that is the end of the selector shaft inside the gearbox nose.

Anyway that end is messy but not fatal. The input shaft seal is worse as that goes hard then it feeds gearbox oil into the clutch. Also worth checking...

  4. Cheers @mikedjames and @Faust. Engine out it is then. So glad I spent a couple of hours getting that old starter bush out when replacing it last week.

  5. Hard to see from your pics where the leak is, but if it's a real gusher from the bell housing end, may be the crank oil seal. Slight weeps from the gearbox nosecone are pretty common and not very dramatic.

    Engine out to investigate!
