Gearbox/gearbox oil/bushes/clutch?... help please.

Thanks very much for your input and advice, genuinely appreciated.
I really don't know if this is what I need, I'm going to start with checking the gearbox oil and go from there.
My '77 already has a different shifter fitted which presumably was fitted to make it better so not sure a second different one would help.
If changing/topping up the gearbox oil doesnt help then I'll be back....

@nobody knows his gearboxes but there are some simple checks you can do before pulling it.

Sounds like you are going to confirm the gearbox oil level is correct. Always loosen the filler on the side of the box before the drain plug. It’s a 17mm hex I think.

Clutch adjustment - you asked “can you adjust the bite point ?” Is it too low or too high ? Correct clutch adjustment is essential to a nice shift. If the clutch is dragging it will get hot and make shifting difficult until it cools again. How old is the clutch cable and what condition is it in ? They have been known to stretch or fray but are cheap and relatively straight forward to replace.

Is the shift plate under the gearstick loose ?

If I recall, the ball park adjustment is to (engine off) put it in second - the gear lever should be pretty vertical and nip everything up. Fine adjustment follows from this.

Are the bushings all ok ? Does the shift rod rattle around underneath ? Is the gearstick ball and socket a good fit and lightly greased ?

Lots to fiddle with but worth the time and effort before you consider going to see Grant at Beetlelink in Badshot Lee. ‘E’s Autos in Bisley are also worth considering if you go the pro route.
