Good evening folks , has anyone bought those gearbox front mounts you can now buy from jk , don't know if VWH do them .
How bad do they have to be before the need to change them . there is a slight gap between the alloy casting and the rubber but as a temporary fix i just pushed a slither of alloy plate to take a bit of slack on the underside section . Will the after market rubber be pants and am i best just leaving as a cheap fix .

    Its a JK one...

We bought one from VW Heritage, it fits fine! The rubber was no different to the one we took off, slightly stiffer but fit well all the same!

They usually get replaced when the MOT man spots a split. The thing with the originals is yes, they will crack eventually, but even when they do they remain surprisingly solid. The bendy repro ones tear rather than crack and the bolt holes elongate into slots. The poorest are really poor but there have been many different ones on the market over the years, including good fakes with VW logo.

The best way to have a stab at whether you have the genuine article is try and bend it. It does depend on how strong you are of course, but roughly speaking the originals will barely bend at all, a bad fake will bend about 90 degs, a really poor one will bend double and let you pick out the metal strengthening around the bolt holes.
I used to have a selection to show people for amusement - I had 4 different ones inc 2 with VW logo, though only one logo'd one was genuine (IMO!).
