  1. morning all :)
i need to change all my CV boots this week, and i have my engine out.
i was wondering if i need to support the gearbox in some way when i take the driveshafts out?
as i dont want to take them off and it hit the floor...
    thanks in advance

  2. You should be okay but a quick look under where the gear box meets the engine will soon tell you . The late bay box is supported off a pair of resilient mounts at that point which are attached to a box section on the cross member above. Come to think of it if your engine is already out then your box is already hanging on the resilient mounts. As far as the driveshafts are concerned you might find it handy to loop a bit of rope or similar around them and the cross member just above to take the weight as the cv bolts are released. A plastic bag to hand is useful to slip over each joint as they come free ...keeps mess to a minimum and dirt out . Good for catching the balls if one comes adrift.

  3. thanks a lot fritt  hadnt thought of that.

  4. Start the cv bolts out with an impact driver if you've got one, espeacialy if they are hex heads. If you strip the head its aqgrometer up to 11 to get the sods out. £15/£20 quid to save on a world of grief.

  5. Your gearbox will stay put - if you've got the engine out and it hasn't hit the floor, it's not going to now! The driveshafts don't support anything.

Good advice from fritt and Pony. Clean the heads of the driveshaft bolts of crud so you can get the right driver in there - either hex head or splined. Avoid having a falling driveshaft clout you on the head when all the bolts are out (ask me how I know this :().

A straightforward job once everything's off. Clean your CVs and give 'em a good regreasing - it's the messiest job you'll do on your van!

  6. thanks guys, il be wapping the impact driver out first then
oh dear, that doesnt sound pleasant, how do you know this snotty?? ;)
and thats alright, i like getting messy!!

  7. I was looking up at a fully unbolted driveshaft, thinking "wonder what's holding that on?" I soon found out the answer was "nothing". It hurt.

  9. Hi,

Is it just a matter of undoing all of the bolts on the cv joints to remove the joint and shaft? I need to replace a inner cv boot this weekend.

  10. If its only one end you can just unbolt one end and change it ,no need to remove whole shaft.

  11. You need to arm yourself with some cable ties always handy for jobs like this
